Portuguese Language Museum celebrates Portuguese Language Day with virtual programming

Between the days 3 and 5 de Mayo, cultural program will bring ‘lives’ music, literature meetings, workshops and conversations with authors from Portuguese-speaking countries

The Portuguese Language Museum, institution of the Department of Culture and Economy of the State of São Paulo Creative, will celebrate the International Day of the Portuguese Language 2020 with three days of virtual programming. From 3 to 5 de Mayo, a series of attractions will take music, ‘slam’ (spoken poetry presentation), literature, storytelling, Workshop, chats and performances to the museum networks. The schedule will be broadcast on YouTube and Facebook the Museum, from the 3:00 pm.

This is the fourth edition of the celebration for the International Day of the Portuguese Language, that in previous years was held in the lobby of Estação da Luz. With the social isolation measures required by the COVID-19 pandemic, cultural programming takes advantage of the web connection to internationalize the celebrations, focused on the plurality of the language in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), that instituted the International Day of the Portuguese Language on 5 de Mayo.

Among the attractions are the Portuguese duo Fado Bicha, that modernized the structures of traditional fado in Portugal (Sunday, day 3); the meeting ‘Poetry in the language of slam’, presented by Roberta Estrela D´Alva with the participation of poets from Brazil, Cape Verde and Portugal (Tuesday, day 5); and ‘lives’ Musical Connection, that will happen in the three days, and will have DJ and musician Kalaf Epalanga DJing (Angola), da cantora Lenna Bahule (Mozambique) and musician Hélio Ramalho (Cabo Verde), with the interlocution of Brazilian researcher Rafael Galante.

The public will also be transported inside the Portuguese Language Museum: in the performance “Silêncio” (Tuesday), dancer Eduardo Fukushima presents a choreography recorded inside the museum's facilities, completely empty and silent. (See the full three-day schedule below)

The celebration of the International Day of the Portuguese Language is an achievement of the Government of the State of São Paulo, Roberto Marinho Foundation and the Portuguese Language Museum, and has EDP as a master sponsor, as Grupo Globo sponsors, Itaú group, Sabesp and support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, ID Brasil, People Magazine, Festlip and the Federal Government through the federal culture incentive law.

From the concept that the language changes all the time, the program will reflect on the language that changes inside the houses, in the face of social isolation. Based on the main exhibition of the Museum, the attractions itinerary investigates the contact of the Portuguese language with other languages, its variations on the continents and the diversity of speech in social groups.

Over the three days, virtual events with authors from Portuguese-speaking countries will unite Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique. These are meetings like “Ortography is also people”, conducted by Minas Gerais poet Ana Elisa Ribeiro, that will debate the use of the word as an instrument to account for what is experienced today. With her, Guinea-Bissau writer and visual artist Gisela Casimiro, Portuguese writer Marco Neves, Mozambican professor Nataniel Ngomane and Pernambuco poet Micheliny Verunschk will reflect on the current situation in the Portuguese language and its local expressions; and the project “Letters from another time”, both in partnership with Revista Pessoa, where writers read letters about this period of confinement. Names like Itamar Vieira Jr, Isabel Nery, Filipa Leal, Tatiana Salem Levy and Evandro Affonso Ferreira will share their perspectives - and their poetics - in exclusive videos.

In the series Peripécias Poéticas, curated by FESTLIP – International Festival of Portuguese Language Arts, actors from different countries play with their speech when interpreting poetry pills in videos. Also curated by the festival, the attraction “Portuguese language, nice to meet you ”puts young people from Angola in contact, Brasil, Portugal and Cape Verde to overcome geographical boundaries with a lively online chat.

The Portuguese Language Museum will be reopened in 2020, after being destroyed by fire. One of the world's first museums entirely dedicated to a language, the Museum celebrates language as a founding and fundamental element of our culture. Through interactive experiences, audiovisual content and immersive environments, the visitor is immersed in the history and diversity of our language.

Music presentation with the Portuguese group Fado Bicha, that prints an LGBTQI identity to the traditional Portuguese musical style. The group is a musical and activist project developed by Lila Fadista, in voice and lyrics, and João Caçador, in instruments and arrangements.

Poetic adventures

The Portuguese language, in its various shades, textures and variations, is the great link of Poetic Peripécias, curated by FESTLIP – International Festival of Portuguese Language Arts. They are short poetry videos lived by Portuguese speaking actors, like Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Brasil, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Letters from another time

Pessoa Magazine Project, “Letters from another time” captures the dramatic reality imposed by the coronavirus, with the confinement experience, fears and relationships with each other and the world. For the Portuguese Language Day, around 12 authors will read, in video, your cards.

Reading Bridges

From the Book Club of Mozambican professor Nataniel Ngomane, readers share excerpts from their favorite books with the museum audience.
