Gilberto Gil's music has become a symbol of several generations. From inspiration in Brazilian roots to connections with Africa, Gil's cultural and political influence spills over borders and represents the possibility of looking at Brazil through historical relations with multiple cultures and, why not, as articulations to rethink future scenarios for society. If Gil drinks from different shades to make his art, how can we be inspired by his work and speech to reflect on what paths we can take during and after these uncertain pandemic times?
In a partnership with Globonews, the Museum of Tomorrow shows an unprecedented interview with the singer and composer Gilberto Gil in the weekly program “Amanhãs aqui e agora”, next friday, às 17h, on the museum's YouTube channel. In the conversation, Gil took a plunge into his work and philosophical thinking to explain how he is seeing and living the social isolation caused by the coronavirus and spoke about the challenges of technology-mediated relationships. He revealed that he cried a lot for the deaths caused by the pandemic, but stated that, although it seems that we are heading towards the abyss, “We are building the brakes”. According to him, young people will teach us how to face new challenges. The Bahian artist also said that his song “Walking with faith” sums up his vision of the current moment.
“A song like this manages to inhabit the popular heart and speaks of this simultaneity that we are experiencing, the apparent contradictions between right and wrong, day and night, far and near, the divine and the human. It has only one motto: a boy walking down the road, but it reveals the varied singing of the people in Brazil and in the world. It is popular music elevated to the category of economic power, based on a breath: walk with faith I will, faith doesn't usually go. It's the life that goes on, continue with dramas and with faith ”, resume Gil, in an optimistic tone.
The interview was mediated by journalist Cristina Aragão and presented by Ricardo Piquet, president of IDG - Institute for Development and Management, responsible for managing the Museum of Tomorrow. The “Amanhãs Aqui e Agora” program was created by the cultural equipment in April to promote debates about the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic in several areas of knowledge. Names like Lenine have already participated in the dialogues, Benilton Bezerra, Mirian Goldenberg, Sergio Besserman, among others.
