Cultural Rio de Janeiro box displays Contemporary Greek Film Festival

Programming with 12 movies will have the presence of the Greek philosopher

From 06 to 18 of June (Tuesday to Sunday), CAIXA Cultural Rio de Janeiro presents the exhibition Contemporary Greek Cinema – Memories of the crisis, that will display 12 films made between 2009 and 2016. Curated by John Rara, Diana Iliescu and Anna Peter Ballalai, the event brings some of the most representative productions of call Greek Weird Wave ("Strange Greek wave", in literal translation). The project has the sponsorship of Caixa Econômica Federal and the Federal Government.

In the midst of the economic crisis affecting Greece, a new "wave" of movies, whose look reveals a reality that the critics, Unable to define its contours, content in "strange". With effect, are weird grotesque characters works, in the midst of bizarre and artificial situations.

The selection of movies features several highlights. Winner of the prize UN certain Regard, at the Cannes Film Festival 2009, and Oscar nominee for best foreign film in 2010, Canine Tooth Giorgios Lanthimos (2009) is, certainly, the most acclaimed film of the show. Tells the story of young people who, overly protected by parents, never had contact with the outside world. The movie will be displayed in the days 06 and 18 of June.

The same is observed in isolation long more recent L (2012), Babis Makridis, or The Sentimental (2016), of Nikso Triantafillidis. In other productions, such as The Academy of Plato (2009), Filippos Tsitos, My country (2010) of Lakshman Tzoumerkas, and Xenia (2014) of H. Koutras, the catastrophic reality seems, little by little, contaminating everyday life with a sort of restlessness epidemic increasingly threatening. In Attenberg (2010) Athina Rachel Tsangari, This estrangement if notes, yet, When a young man discovers sexuality while taking care of the father on the verge of death.

Debate and catalog:

To discuss the disturbing world view productions, the show will display the chat The crisis in Greek cinema, with the most important contemporary Greek philosopher, Theofanis Tasis. The debate will take place on 14 of June, at 7:10 pm, and will have simultaneous translation.

Degree in physics and philosophy from the University of Crete, Greece, and PhD in Germany, Tasis is author of theories working concepts of image and identity in the social sphere and will address how the Greek crisis has been transposed to cinema screens.

In parallel, throughout the season will be distributed, for free, a catalogue containing information of each film, and unpublished texts by Anna Peter Ballalai, Luis Carlos Junior and Victor Narciso.
