Journalist, costume designer, museóloga, dressmaker – how would you like to be called -, teacher and collector, Sophia Jobim bequeathed to the Museu Histórico Nacional the collection of artistic objects and pieces of clothing that she gathered throughout 30 years.
The donation took place posthumously in 1968, by his brother Danton Jobim, introducing a new theme to the museum's acquisition policy. All conservation and capture of images of ethnographic pieces in this collection, under the custody of the MHN Technical Reserve, was one of the highlights of a series of actions contemplated by the Annual Plan 2021, conceived and developed by the National Historical Museum, with the support of the Associação de Amigos do MHN, and sponsored by the Vale Cultural Institute (by Federal Law for Promotion of Culture).
In order to publicize the project, completed in 2023, on 15 February, at 3:0 pm, will happen to Live “Restoration of pieces from the MHN Sophia Jobim collection”, with the participation of Jeane Mautoni (museologist for MHN), Marcia Cerqueira (museologist and restorer) and Madison Oliveira (EBA/UFRJ Professor).

about the collection
The Sophia Jobim Collection is made up of varied pieces – historical and ethnographic, mainly -, from different origins, like Mexico, Germany, Greece, Soviet Union, Panama, Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union, North Korea, Sudan, Israel, France, Hungary and Mauritania.
This legacy is invaluable for Brazilian and foreign researchers., who devote time and effort to preserving the memory of this collection, producing articles, dissertations, theses and books. Currently, it is one of the most researched in the museum, what justified the conservation project, especially considering the 53 years of stay at MHN.
About the restore process
The conservation of textiles involves a series of actions that aim to increase the resistance of the object to physical agents. (damage and loss of value due to storage, improper handling and transportation), chemicals (acidification, yellowing) and biological (pest and fungus attack).
Among these actions carried out, it is worth mentioning the hygiene, small repairs, containment of tears, insulation of metal elements to prevent corrosion, stabilization of objects and packaging correctly.

As this is a huge project., each step was documented in photos and video, may in the future unfold in catalogs, exhibitions or even be used to study conservation techniques that can be applied to other textile collections, or serve as a reference for future interventions, if it's necessary.
