“The dark veins of the Sahara” tests the limits of empathy in society in a story that passes through Brazil and reaches the desert
What legacy will today's society leave for future generations?? No romance The dark veins of the Sahara, the gaucho writer Marcos Emilio Frizzo makes one reflect on how human misery – linked not only to poverty, but to selfishness, individualism, violence and greed – is passed from parents to children and how it influences the community.
The fictional plot tells the story of Carlo, wealthy and privileged Italian, who feels an inexplicable dissatisfaction with life. To understand your emotions, decides to face the unknown and discover other realities. He passes through Brazil, in a fishing community in Santa Catarina, and then goes on a voluntary mission to the Sahel, region of Africa – close to the Sahara desert – which is home to a people tormented by war, scarcity, slavery and terrorism.
By witnessing inequality and exclusion on unimaginable scales, the protagonist stops looking at himself and tries to understand the pain of other people. The great lesson is that difficulties are experienced by everyone, regardless of social class or place. What is up to people is to invest in empathy, after all, the world is connected and every decision made (or not) affects the community and changes destinies. He feels the impact of this when the family invests in a military company., responsible for deaths close to him.

In this fictional story that discusses self-knowledge, the protagonist's journey encourages the reader to reevaluate their attitudes. “I believe that we can only change society if we are willing to review behaviors, habits and if we are committed to a logic that transcends the immediacy of our own interests”, says Frizzo.
Social issues are, in fact, a preponderant aspect for the author. Interested in new cultures and understanding society and its organizations, it was from trips to the countries discussed in the book that he brought inspiration for the plot. Biologist and postdoc in neuroscience, Marcos Frizzo is a researcher and university professor in Porto Alegre, where he was born and lives.

About the author: Marcos Emílio Frizzo is Italian-Brazilian, born in Porto Alegre. He is a biologist with a bachelor's degree in physiology, master's degree in neuroanatomy, PhD and postdoc in Neurosciences. Acts as Full Professor in the Department of Morphological Sciences, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
