Around 1951, the Venezuelan began exhibiting works that involved an element of vibration, through the repetition of formal elements. For him, the use of repetition was a way to free oneself from the formal concepts of traditional art, which was linked to figurative art. He thought that true abstract art could only be transfigured through the performance of movement. In optical repeats, developed high-relief works, which earned him the status of painter and sculptor.
About Franz Weissmann
Diverging from the teaching methods of the National School of Fine Arts, Franz Weissmann, exchanges the academy for the studio of Polish sculptor August Zamoyski, where remained between 1942
and 1944. In 1945, living in Belo Horizonte and influenced by Rodin's sculptural works, Brancusi by Henry Moore, Weissmann explores the composition of massive figures, starting to recreate them in abstract language.
The power of such incursions into essential volume and form are updated in the work Cubo Vazado (1951), that Weissmann submits to the selection of the 1st São Paulo Biennial. Already circumscribed in Concretism, structural rigor and subtle volumetric suggestions, but well-defined hollow cubes reveal what Franz Weissmann calls “active void”, which can be understood as the presentification of space by the vibration between matter and void that, in a dialectical relationship, affirm each other in harmonious opposition.
