Interview
Ulysses, tell us a little about yourself ...
I was born in São Paulo Capital, in 16 September 1940. I have two university backgrounds: Accounting Sciences and Business Administration and today I continue working as an entrepreneur in the accounting area. I have always been very curious and throughout my life I developed several hobbies including amateur radio, radialism, elaboration of programs dedicated to radio listeners and the blind community and, more recently, digital painting.
Since my adolescence I have always been interested in drawing, awakened by a drawing teacher still in high school. He had a great teaching skills, and taught me the basics, and your classes were booked. I perfectly remember that, before drawing anything, he marked the vanishing points on the blackboard.
already adult, to distract myself I made pencil drawings, aiming to represent my ideas in the simplest way possible.
About four years ago I met a professional draftsman, we were neighbors and with the coexistence we became friends and I started to visit him regularly to show my drawings and appreciate his work.
He started to guide me, identifying my style.
In his work he uses the software called Adobe Illustrator, a vector image editor.
I was advised to use this editor in my arts.. I liked the suggestion and, and, I started working with that software, after receiving some lessons from this friend.
When he woke up his desire to be an artist?
After I started using Adobe Illustrator, I read many articles about digital painting and concluded that it could be a digital artist, representing my ideas in a simple way, with personalized colors and in a different way.
What kind of art do you like best?
All art performed by means of computers that can be considered a digital art. In addition to all the artistic expression that portrays everyday images in an original way.
Marked and I remember
The drawings that I had made manually and that I recreated using Adobe Illustrator.
What struck me the most was a Rooster that, initially I drew with felt-tip pens.
I wanted to draw a rooster using squares and rectangles. There were several drawings until I reached one that looked good.
When I was already mastering digital painting I rescued these sketches and created my GaloUG. It took many drawings and many months to reach the final version, but it stayed as I wanted, in format and simplicity.
I have kept all the drawings, from the first, until the last, showing the evolution, backtracking, and solutions.
How he developed his style (techniques)?
In digital paintings I developed my technique experimentally, it means, successive attempts.
Always trying to represent my ideas clearly, simple, and with different colors.
Cite if you had artistic influences in your works and which artists?
I had an influence on the style of the great artist Piet Mondrian.
His representation of the abstract was composed of horizontal and vertical lines and strokes, a bold composition, but limited in elements. Geometric shapes gained prominence, making a strategic context with the primary colors (Blue, Red and yellow), black was already used, especially, on the lines, and white balanced the arrangement of the work, which had a simplistic and striking structure.
I really like the works of Van Gogh, notably of the colors.
Do you have a family member or acquaintance who is an artist?
No plastic artist in my family. My father tried to start the art of painting with watercolors.. Afterwards with oil paint, but after a few years he gave up.
Living from art is possible?
I have art as a hobby, I aim, however, come to market them. I believe it is possible to live off art in Brazil.
The appreciation of national works in the world is growing. There are many possibilities in the art market.
With well-defined goals, disposition, determination, knowledge, and a lot of study, art can bring good financial results.
