“Reciclos – Creating New Perspectives” enters free visitation at Unibes Cultural, from 1 September to 16 October, curated by the notable artist Mundano
The city of São Paulo will reflect on consumption, recycling and sustainability from exhibition “Recycles – Creating New Perspectives”, that opens the doors in the day 1or of September at Unibes Cultural, with free visitation until 16 October. The exhibition features works of art that explore the unusual, when produced from recyclable waste. “Reciclos” has the idea and realization of the Educare Network, with curated by the notable environmental activist and graffiti artist Mundano and sponsorship of Novelis and Ball Corporation via the Culture Incentive Law of the Special Secretariat for Culture.
Aluminum cans, electrical wires, styrofoam, plastic, cardboard, glass, wood, iron and other metals give life to panels, sculptures, facilities, objects, videos and silkscreen by the hands of nine invited contemporary artists. The “Recycles”, which has an interactive and itinerant character, will also continue to São José dos Campos, Pindamonhangaba, Salvador and Recife, after São Paulo.
The show transcends the proposal to provoke reflection from its unusual works and so rich in messages. With an educational approach, “Reciclos” invites the public to participate and interact with spaces, parts, games and workshops that promote access to information and curiosities about responsible waste disposal and the importance of recycling. A photo gallery also promises to attract the attention of visitors.. Are 14 2m50x2m30 images of Brazilian recyclable material pickers, in an action to recognize these urban workers who act as essential agents for recycling in the country.
The photos in the gallery are from the book “Recicladores de Sonhos”, which will be launched simultaneously with the opening of the exhibition. Sponsored by Novelis via the Culture Incentive Law of the Special Secretariat for Culture, and carried out by the Educare Network, the book features the profile of 31 collectors of recyclable materials and fulfills the objective of giving names and faces to women and men who earn their livelihood from recycling. According to data from the Institute for Applied Economic Research (ipea), are the scavengers and the scavengers, spread across hundreds of cities across the country, those responsible for collecting almost 90% of recycled materials in Brazil.
Each image in the gallery accompanies audio with the testimony of the respective collector, that can be accessed by the cell phone camera. The same goes for the exhibition., which has audio description with extra content about each of the works. Some resources will be presented via QR Code and Braille in order to enhance the experience of the visitor with a disability. Boards with technical specifications will be made available in Braille, and all audiovisual content will have subtitles.
“Reciclos” also pays special attention to children and adolescents.. In addition to interactive activities, workshops and a “knowledge trail” are planned with a focus on children and young people. The curator of the exhibition, Mundane – founder of the NGO Pimp My Carroça and the Cataki app – informs that the exhibition was designed for all ages, “but it is certainly the children and adolescents who will enjoy the most, because they are the ones fighting for a better future”.
Art without discard – Those who visit “Reciclos” cannot imagine the challenge that each creation represented for the artists who sign them. Although most of them exercise environmental activism, participating in the show meant transposing the playful universe of its original style, using everyday materials for the 3D shape. André Inea signed the works (SP), Felipe Score (SP), Kelly Reis (SP), Bruna Serif (SP), Ever Costa (SP), Rodrigo Machado (SP), Underneath (SP), Luna Bastos (RJ) and Odé Frazão (SP).
“It was a joy to be able to challenge each of them, and what we seek together is for the public to create new perspectives on waste and new perspectives on the use of these materials., that are amazing and that, sometimes, take up just a few minutes of our day, being discarded then, may stay many and even thousands of years in the environment”, says the curator.
“When we conceived the “Expo Reciclos” in 2016, We were already aware of the urgency of the topic, and recognizing art as a powerful tool for connection and reflection, we arrived at the concept of the exhibition. The inappropriate disposal scenario remains a challenge and we, as an answer, We work to expand the scope of the show, bringing more interaction and awareness resources. The idea is to promote a great questioning about the legacy we are leaving for the planet and for future generations”, comments Katia Rocha, director of the Education Network.
