"And Dwelled Among Us – The Nativity according to the painters"
The reporting of facts that occurred in a striking and decisive manner, at the beginning of the Christian Era, it was transmitted orally so that the majority of the population could be aware of what and how things happened and what was decided from that moment on.. Written records come in a second moment. The art follows the same pattern in his original works. in sacred art, is no different; its themes dedicated to evangelization, portray a philosophy that permeates the history of both the church and Christianity. “It is from the 2nd century onwards that images relating to the birth of Christ began to appear based mainly on the oral narratives of the first Christians. Later, with the circulation of the texts of the Matthew evangelists, Mark and Lucas, the works that portray the Nativity are expanded. since the Annunciation, made by Archangel Gabriel to Mary, until the return from Egypt and the early childhood years of Jesus, hundreds of works were produced, fixing in our memory the events linked to Christmas ", explains João Rossi, one of the exhibition's curators.
The exhibition "And Dwelled Among Us – The Nativity according to the painters”, with 31 canvases and reliefs ranging from the 16th to the 20th centuries, de importantes autores as Fulvio Pennacchi, Paolo Veronese, Jorge José Eduardo Vedras, Samson Flexor, among many, conveys the perspective with which each one saw the story of Jesus' birth and childhood. Italian paintings, Brazil, chinese, Ibero-Andean, Portuguese sculptures and 17th century national works, a nativity scene from the 18th century Madeira Island and sculptures of the Child Jesus and the pregnant Mary will be in the exhibition space.
From the simple assembly of cribs at home, common routine among families from all over the world, even the works of the great masters that are now found in museums in different countries, all this artistic production serves as a trigger to the memory that the true meaning of Christmas is broader and deeper than just commercial or social actions.
"At home or on the street, the BUT celebrates Christmas with all the intensity and joy so needed in these difficult times.” José Carlos Marcal de Barros
