Roulien Boechat presents the exhibition “The Bitterness of Sugar”, where he brings characters from the luxurious cabarets and bars of the Recôncavo Baiano of the sugar plantation lords, painted by the artist in the dark, using lighting technology.
The shows, created by EntreArte, can be visited at Centro Cultural Correios RJ, from 01/12, curated by Carlos Bertão, and exhibition design and lighting by Alê Teixeira.
EntreArte presents the exhibition “The Bitter Sugar”, by Roulien Boechat, who, as well as a self-taught plastic artist, a photographer, historian, specializing in History of Brazil and Art, and interior designer.
The exhibition brings works by the artist that portray the characters of the cabarets and luxurious bars of the Recôncavo Baiano, from his grandmother's memories, from the stories of Jorge Amado and Gilberto Freyre, and slave traders, that took on a life of their own in paintings on canvas, in which he uses a mixed technique, like bitumen, texture and water-based paint.
One of the techniques that Roulien has learned and developed over the years, educating your vision, is to paint practically in the penumbra, that is, almost in the dark, with a yellow light wherever the reflected light comes from.
Because of design college, he did a specialization in lighting technology and studied warm and cold colors. This technique changes the perception of the viewer, causes the feeling that you are really designing an environment for the character.
The inspiration for this exhibition came when Roulien did field research and became interested in the readings of Jorge Amado (‘In the Country of Carnival’, among others) and Gilberto Freyre (‘Big House and Senzala’). His grandmother was from Bahia, came to Rio carrying two children, one of them your father, putting together the stories I used to hear from the two, not only the daily life of the Recôncavo Baiano, like real people.
Many of your grandmother's friends were white, and told that their mothers and grandmothers came from Portugal, brought by slave traders. On the same ship came Portuguese orphans, traded with slaves, despite being white, but who lived in orphanages and came with the intention of ‘serving’ to the lord of ingenuity.
These girls had barely reached the age of majority and were already frequenting the most luxurious places, as escorts, because for the white man and landowner, they were beautiful and thin, unlike their wives, donas home.
Young boys often came, also orphans, with feminine features (as entrusted) and pretended to be girls, all living in the luxurious cabarets and bars. Hearing these stories from his grandmother greatly inspired the artist to write a book., to be published soon, where the prologue will be this exhibition, introducing the characters of the paintings, which will serve as an illustration.
The exhibition can be visited in Galleries I and II on the second floor, no Cultural Center Correios RJ, from the 1st of December 2022, withcurated by Carlos Bertão, exhibition design and lighting by Alê Teixeira and production by EntreArte Consulting, until 28 January 2023.
About Roulien Boechat
self-taught plastic artist, born in 1972, in the City of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana- RJ, where at the age of six he began to scribble his first crayons. Moved, in 1990, to Niterói-RJ. In 2004, together with artists Monteiro Prestes, Clovis Pescio and Luiz Pinto, among others, was part of the editions of Revista Galeria em Tela, from the online publisher, and performed at exhibitions, painting live.
Today, his figurative work is loaded with images of the earth, portraying their often real characters, surrounded by texture and striking colors. Its theme seeks to highlight and preserve Brazilian culture and its own roots..
Son of Bahia and mother who is granddaughter of Europeans, grandson of indian, Roulien Boechat rescues in its history and origin, the source of inspiration.
In addition to exhibitions held in Brazil, has works in private collections such as Cuba, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal. After a few years dedicating himself to photography, returns to the fine arts.

Carioca, lawyer, Graduated from the State University of Rio de Janeiro, Masters at New York University (NYU), worked in law firms in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and New York.
In 1980, was hired by the World Bank, in Washington, where he worked for almost twenty years.
Art collector for more than 40 years, upon retiring from the World Bank, he returned to Brazil and began to dedicate himself to producing and curating exhibitions.
was curator, among others, of exhibitions at the Correios Cultural Center, in Rio de Janeiro, Cultural Post, in Niterói,in Centro Cultural do Banco do Brazil, in Brasília, at the Caixa Econômica Federal Cultural Center, in São Paulo, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul – MARCO.
Today he divides his time between Rio de Janeiro and Bonito, MS, having conceived and executed the project IMERSÕES MS, which involved a residency work by the renowned plastic artist Carlos Vergara in the Serra da Bodoquena region, also with the forecast of an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul – MARCO and the preparation and execution of a book and a video of the work developed during the residency.
Was, also, Exhibition curator CONSCIENCE, by Peruvian artist Ivan Ciro Palomino, produced by the UN, and held at Centro Cultural Correios RJ, in the period of 25/09/19 to 19/01/20, which was visited by 143.524 people.
In all the exhibitions he curated, in which he presented works by more than 40 artists, Carlos Bertão had the participation of Alê Teixeira, who was responsible for their design and lighting.
