Government of the State of Espírito Santo, through the Secretariat of Culture, in partnership with Associação Cultural Videobrasil, presents RETURN, exhibition held in two important museums in Vitória
With works from the Videobrasil Collection gathered over the course of 40 years, project is divided into two exhibitions, at the Espírito Santo Art Museum (MAES) and in the Homero Massena Gallery (GHM)
From its vast collection gathered over four decades of trajectory, Associação Cultural Videobrasil presents, between days 10 June and 10 from september the show TURNOVER, held simultaneously in two outstanding spaces in Vitória (ES). while the exposure Turnaround – Art and geopolitics in the Videobrasil Collection occupies the Espírito Santo Art Museum (MAES), Reviravolta – Body and performance at the Videobrasil Collection occupies Homero Massena Gallery (GHM). Curated by Solange Farkas, founder and director of Videobrasil, the project continues the association's constant work to look at its collection and keep it alive, debating fundamental issues of contemporary.
“The two exhibitions gathered under the title turnaround attest to the power and symbolic reach of this collection on two different fronts. Conceived in light of other twists, including the recent periods of isolation in which we have been forced, everyone, performing in front of screens and seeing the world through them, reveal an artistic production committed, since always, to overturn our certainties, deal with what is urgent and put us in front of new perspectives”, says Solange.
Conceived in partnership with the Espírito Santo Secretariat of Culture – which also helped to bring works by Espírito Santo artists to the project –, the show gains even greater relevance by presenting for the first time a significant set of works from the Videobrasil Collection in the capital of Espírito Santo. The project meets the institution's historical desire to access territories outside the great axes of power, not only in the world (or South Global), but also in the country (beyond the Rio-São Paulo axis).
“We are experiencing an apex of the artistic production of Espírito Santo, a robust production, consistent; researches, practices and discursivities in direct dialogue with the urgencies of today's times. The proposed dialogue with Videobrasil in Vitória encourages an exchange necessary to strengthen the networks, of artists and their productions beyond the borders of territories”, says Nicolas Soares, director of MAES.
Art and geopolitics in the Videobrasil Collection, no MAES, part of the cartography drawn by the last two editions of the Contemporary Art Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil. Highlighting the production of the so-called Global South – term referring to territories on the margins of hegemonic modernization and central capitalism, mainly in Latin America, Africa, eastern europe, Asia and Middle East -, the exhibition features works by Aline X, Gustavo Garden, Upper Amazon Audiovisual, Ana Vaz, Bakary Diallo, Daniel Monroy Cuevas, Enrique Ramirez, Luciana Magno, Paulo Nazareth, Seydou Cisse, Tiécoura N’Daou and the indigenous collective formed by Ana Carvalho, Ariel Sunshine Ortega, Fernando Ancil and Patricia To Yxapy.
Artistic practices appear in the exhibition that blur the boundaries with science and between sciences to expand our conceptions of the world., as well as an “artivist” use of video by minority groups, to reinforce community practices, defend threatened rights and reinforce the utopia of rebuilding the world from collectivities linked to identity and affection.
“The need to reverberate in all its potency non-hegemonic stories gives video a narrative breath that was previously the privilege of cinema.. At the same time, and almost to the same extent, artists mobilize the power of the image to create spaces and metaphors”, says Solange in text about the show. And she completes: “It is not surprising that a production based on the idea of resistance and political vocation flourishes in a moment of setback and uncertainty.. The power of art that emerges from the South can no longer be ignored by the international circuit, nor is the importance of this perspective in a global concert relativized”.
The exhibition Body and performance in the Videobrasil Collection, on the other hand, presents at Galeria Homero Massena the result of an immersion in the records of performances produced by Videobrasil throughout its 40 years – including happenings, musical interventions, video performances, among others. Since its first edition, in 1983, the Videobrasil Biennial offers performance an unprecedented space on the Brazilian scene, including commissioning projects in this language for the exhibitions. In this way, the exhibition in Vitória illuminates some of the directions taken by performance over the decades, whether incorporating music, theater, dance, visual arts and urban intervention, whether looking at religious rituals.
“In the countries of the Global South, amid state violence and colonial heritage, artists shape body and image in a production that is a sign of life against the politics of death. In the main program of this exhibition, they maneuver the performance repertoire in different ways to bring to their own bodies the confrontation of urgent themes, like structural racism, state terrorism and gender violence”, highlights Farkas.
Gathered from more than 200 Videobrasil Collection performance records, the list of artists and collectives participating in the show, coming from different corners of the globe, is vast: Melati Suryodarmo, Marcello Mercado, Coco Fusco, Front 3 February, Luiz de Abreu, Otávio Donasci, Lenora de Barros and Walter Silveira, Steina Vasulka and Stephen Vitiello, Michael Smith, Wally Salomao and Carlos Nader, Eder Santos, Marco Paulo Rolla, Alexandre da Cunha, Chelpa Ferro, Ayrson Heraclitus, Felipe Bittencourt, Aya Eliav and Ofir Feldman and Paula Garcia.
There is also a special program in the exhibition dedicated to capixaba artists with performance works: Charlene Bicalho, Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Geovanni Lima, hum Fone, Marcus Vinicius, Natalie Miredia and Rubiane Maia. A significant part of these works on display will become part of the Videobrasil Collection, which, in addition to safeguarding it, is committed to giving greater visibility and circulation to works and artists.
With the two exhibitions in Vitória, gathered under the title TURNOVER, the Videobrasil – created during the dictatorship – continues one of his great missions, that is, present and promote the political use, combative and libertarian that the artists make of the video. For this, the institution once again creates ways to reactivate its collection, retrieve and understand the works in their contexts and create dialogues from them. “In addition to the complex issue of conservation – of volatile support, the video collection demands heavy structure, specific knowledge and permanent updating -, there is a need to create strategies capable of keeping these contents alive and in contact with the world”, concludes Solange.
