The untitled painting, donated to the institution by Maria Lúcia de Araújo Cintra, brings two self-portraits of the artist, on the front and back of the support. The work is on display at the Paulo Mendes de Almeida Library, at the Museum
The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo received a donation of a work by the artist Sérgio Milliet (1898 – 1966), important supporter of the museum in its early years.
The painting has just been donated by Maria Lúcia de Araújo Cintra to the MAM collection and is displayed at the Paulo Mendes de Almeida Library until the day 12 de Mayo.
Untitled (self-portrait) It is a work in oil on wood and has a unique characteristic: She presents two self-portraits with different finishes, one on the front and one on the back of the support.
It will also be available for public consultation, in the library, the catalog for the exhibition Homage to Sérgio Milliet, carried out by MAM in 1969.
At the time, the exhibition brought together works by Milliet that were scattered among her friends' collections. The catalog features texts by José Geraldo Vieira and Quirino da Silva.
Cauê Alves, museum chief curator, highlights that Sérgio Milliet was one of the decisive characters in the founding of MAM São Paulo, as well as throughout the initial phase of the institution. “The self-portrait that has just entered the MAM collection, complements the other six paintings by the artist already present in the collection that came from the Tamagni collection, fundamental in the second phase of the museum. This work, in particular, has the particularity of bringing a sketch, an unfinished painting on the back, and its complete realization in front, which allows us to learn a little about your work process”, comments.
