Recital on the libretto by Mário de Andrade is the main highlight of the month of May. The Experimental Repertoire Orchestra and the String Quartet of the City of São Paulo also perform
São Paulo, 19 April 2022 – throughout the month of may, Theatro Municipal de São Paulo will host several artistic and musical performances. With paid and free attractions, Theatro Municipal highlights in its programming the opera Coffee, with libretto by Mário de Andrade and its theoretical provocation by a choral opera, in which groups in society were portrayed as a collectivity rather than as individuals.
With unpublished composition by Felipe Senna, the libretto is situated in the historical context of the crisis of 1929 that paralyzed the ports, expelled peasants from farms and provoked a popular revolution in society. The performance is directly linked to the centenary celebrations of the Week of Modern Art and will be, after the experience of Hans-Joachim Koellreutter in the years 1990, a contemporary and current approach to the work of Mário de Andrade.
The opera will be on display between the days 3 and 4 and of 6 to 8 of May and counts with the participation of the Municipal Symphony Orchestra, under the regency and musical direction of maestro Luís Gustavo Petri, of the São Paulo Choir, under the regency of Maíra Ferreira, of the São Paulo City Ballet, of the MST – Landless Movement and the circus. With tickets between R＄10 and 120 reais, classification is free.
On 12, at 19h, the City String Quartet performs in the Conservatory Room, at Praça das Artes, with the concert “Bachiano”. In the repertoire two songs: “Brazilian Bachianas nº 1”, escape: Conversation (Version for Quartet Matheus Bitondi) by the composer, conductor and one of the most important figures in the Brazilian music scene, Heitor Villa-lobos, and “Suite in B Minor”, Brandenburg Concerto no. 5, by German composer and musician Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will last for 60 minutes, with admission to R＄30 and free classification.
On May 1st, Praça das Artes receives the exhibition psychodemic, by the french artist Antoine d'Agata, which brings a visceral look at the artist in relation to the coronavirus pandemic, with photographs taken in France and a part in Brazil, in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Using the Magnum Photos Agency office, in France, as your work base and temporary housing, Antoine d'Agata leaves daily during the pandemic to record and observe the city, hospitals and health centers. At the beginning of this journey Antoine adopted “thermography” – a thermal camera attached to the cell phone, whose thermal device reacts and converts the heat of bodies and objects into an image. Without revealing people's identity, the thermography used captures the activity of the bodies, Your lives", what's inside.
The exhibition is a partnership with the French Consulate in São Paulo. on the 1st of May, the opening of the exhibition will have a master class with the photographer, in the Conservatory Room, at 4:00 pm, which will address some aspects of his trajectory and his personal and political-social engagement in the. We continue with the exhibition Contramemória, that intends to critically reread and translate, for the current context, the cultural atmosphere of the Modern Art Week in 1922, held at the Municipal Theater of São Paulo, 100 years ago. In addition, The exhibition has approx. 117 works, among paintings, videos, sculptures, drawings, objects, among other artistic languages and curated by Lilia Schwarcz, Jaime Lauriano and Pedro Meira Monteiro. Visitors can enjoy these great works of Brazilian culture until the 5 of June, in the Main Hall of the Municipal Theater, in addition to specific schedules for educational visits for groups of 15 to 30 people.

On 15, às 11h, to Experimental Repertory Orchestra I present the concert “Fantastic Symphonies V”, in the Municipal Theater Showroom. With the participation of assistant conductor Thiago Tavares, the repertoire brings the songs "Nights in the Gardens of Spain (23’)”, by composer and pianist, Manuel De Falla and “Sinfonia nº 2, “Uirapuru” (30’)”, created by Brazilian composer Mozart Camargo Guarnieri. The presentation will be open to the public, as income from R ＄ 10.
In the days 17 and 19, both at 19 pm, the Praça das Artes welcomes the pianist Guilherme de Almeida, in the Conservatory Room, with the concert “Requiem to Naomi Munakata”. The presentation is another tribute to the great personality of Brazilian choral music, Naomi Munakata. The concert will be the pianistic improvisation of a Requiém in his memory: an invitation to live a unique experience, Inspired by poetry and questions.
Guilherme de Almeida dedicated himself to learning the art of the cello, piano, singing and composition in São Paulo, in addition to dedicating himself to studies of improvisation at the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris, na class of Jean-François Zygel, in 2019. The concert will last for 60 minutes, as income at R ＄ 30.
On 26, the City String Quartet back to the Conservatory Room, at Praça das Artes, to present the showBrazilian Identity III”, at 19h. The repertoire includes the songs “String Quartet", composed of Clorinda Rosato and "Quartet No. 2”, of the composer and one of the most significant figures in Brazilian classical music, Francisco Mignone. The presentation will last for 60 minutes, with admission to R＄30 and free classification.
And it's not over yet! We will have more events free and open to the public. Day 18/05, at 19h, takes place in the opening of Praça das Artes, the Soiree in the Square. And on the day 04 de Mayo, the Praça das Artes receives once again the This Night is Improvised!. On this day, the stage will be opened for the participation of those who want to exhibit various languages such as dance, theater, poetry and disco, thus awakening the concept of improvisation in which the artist who moves around the city finds a structure to show his talent, just like the challenge of “getting into the circle” that is typical of Hip Hop culture. MC Max BO, former presenter of the program Manos e Minas, and one of the biggest references in freestyle in Brazil, will interact with the artists present, inviting them to the art of improvisation.
