The Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo – MAS-SP, institution of the Department of Culture and Economy of the State of São Paulo Creative, inaugurates "Painting Ibero-Andina – Religious art in Hispanic America”, curated by Beatriz Cruz. The exhibition presents the most recent incorporation of the acquis MAS-SP, a precious set of 10 ibero-Andean works of art – donation made by the engineer and collector Ladi Biezus.
The exhibits in this new temporary show MAS-SP They have invaluable importance not only for the theme portrayed, but for revealing the beginning of artistic production in the Americas. “Its existence is closely related to the facts linked to the Spanish domination in America, justified, among other facts, the bulls of donation, edited by Pope Alexander IV, in 1493, was granted in which the Catholic king, Ferdinand and Isabella, ownership over lands discovered. In Exchange, the Spanish crown assumed the commitment to carry out an effective action of evangelization and conversion to Catholicism of the American people”, said the executive director of MAS-SP, José Carlos Marcal de Barros.
From then, the American continent was supported by two powers, the temporal and the spiritual - the Crown and the Church. Both needed be present in the New World, something only possible through multiple representations, for natives and for those who took up residence there in order to legitimize those powers. “To fulfill the plans of evangelization, the church laid hands mainly of art as an essential resource for spreading the faith. Del Caprio and summarizes their use in defining the art will be shown as "a means of expression that exerted a special attraction for indigenous, becoming an excellent support for the didactic explanations of Catholic doctrine '”, He explains the executive director of MAS-SP.
Soon, works depicting biblical scenes from the New Testament, the lives of saints, angels, archangels, cherubim and not rare scenes of the Virgin Mary when Girl and the life of Jesus, made in Europe, aportam in the New World – and are now reproduced by artists and native or European artisans settled there, incorporating elements of local flora and fauna. So, in the 17th century, a great artistic production center is formed in the Cusco region, also attracting artists from other cities. In the words of Goncalo Ivo, artist, architect and writer: “It is in a context like this that comes the Cuzco school. Images that served the catechesis, They show the match between cultures from different worlds. Reveal something fresh, pure and primitive. They are colored jewels in the rough sky new world”.
From 1960, becomes part of important collections in São Paulo a portion of this endless artistic production of Catholic theme, which is displayed on walls, along with colonial furniture, imagine and other objects of worship, as chalices and ambulas. “This shows, the Museum of Sacred Art brings a little this way to see and display this type of expression of faith, in conjunction with other parts of its collection, as part of the culture of proactive policy of the Department of Culture and Creative Economy of the State”, concludes José Carlos Marcal de Barros.
