Mul.ti.plo Espaço Arte opens the first solo show in Rio de Janeiro by Nuno Sousa Vieira, one of the most renowned Portuguese visual artists. The show “I have tired eyes” opens on 25 August, with text by Portuguese critic Rita Gaspar Vieira. In all, nine unpublished paintings and a video, in an expographic project conceived exclusively for the gallery. The exhibition is part of the international program of Mul.ti.plo during the 12to. ArtRio edition (which happens to 14 to 18 September, at Marina da Gloria), can be visited until 28 September, Leblon.
In the first room, there are nine works in a series of 15, made especially for the exhibition. They are paintings made with acrylic paint on plexiglass (clear acrylic sheets), in dimensions 50 x 36,3 cm each. The works reflect one of the main particularities of the work of Sousa Vieira: the use of materials that have already been used before, who have a past, that carry a story. “My interest is for these materials to attract people’s eyes again, even if otherwise. It is proof that we can organize the world in another way.”, says the artist. Not by chance, we last 20 years, he installed his atelier inside a dismantled plastic factory, a Simala, in Leiria, Your hometown. It's this universe, from 6.000 m2 of covered area and an immense amount of materials left behind, the artist, known for its sculptures composed of various manufacturing materials, architectural elements and discarded furniture, use as raw material.
At the exhibition, Souza Vieira also resorts to the use of the word, but on the back of the works. “The works bear written words, that we don't see clearly. We only perceive them through the time-marked surfaces, of the acrylic glasses that compose them”, account Rita, referring to another facet of Nuno's work: the subtle game between the visible and the invisible, between what is evident and what is not seen. “I want to direct the gaze to the hidden. It's the other way around where I want to go. We don't just see with our eyes, we see with the brain, with the senses, with the whole body. It is this look that I want to bring to the exhibition”, he says. That's why too, the back of each painting in the exhibition will be registered on postcards, that will be given to visitors, so they can take it home.
Another highlight of the show at Mul.ti.plo is the presentation of the set of paintings. “The exhibition project is practically a third work. Everything was thought of by Nuno”, explains Stella Ramos, I was a member of Mul.ti.plo. “Souza Vieira breaks the limits of wall and ceiling, interfering in the space and carrying out a dialogue with the architecture of the art office”, Müller adds Maneco, Stella's partner in the gallery.

in room two, the highlight is a video work, from 2011, with approximately eight minutes. “The video reports the walling of the entrance to my studio, and whenever the worker enters the scene the video is cut and only comes back when the worker leaves. The work seeks to reflect on the physical invisibility of the worker in favor of the visibility of the consequence of his work.”, says the artist, who will be in Rio for the opening of the exhibition and then goes to São Paulo where he opens a show at the Raquel Arnaud gallery.
