Based in the United States, Gilvan Nunes opens singles curated by Fernando Cocchiarale at Galeria Patricia Costa
“The path always ends up converging”, defined Gilvan Nunes when talking about oil paintings, drawings, ceramics and porcelains that he presents in the individual “Hilomorfismos”, from day 14 July, after a hiatus of 5 years without exhibiting in Brazil. Currently living in the United States, the artist opens the exhibition curated by Fernando Cocchiarale, at Galeria Patricia Costa, the Mall Casino Atlantic.
The works are the result of a process that took place during the pandemic, between 2020 and 2022. This period proved to be quite fertile., having the artist produced 30 large and small format paintings, 28 drawings and 50 pottery, between vases and wall pieces. According to Gilvan, ceramics gained strength from 10 years ago, since moving to philadelphia, where he acquired an oven and was able to evolve in the technique.
“My work has always been material: landscapes and all paintings. Suddenly, it was as if I had a need to remove the material a little and organize it elsewhere. Maybe that was the biggest wish: reorganize the matter, separating on screens and surfaces. The experience of living abroad provided more time to think, redirect ideas. This ‘hiatus’ made possible a kind of fresh start.”, says Gilvan Nunes who has participated in two press conferences in the United States, where an individual is already scheduled for next year..
“Hylomorphism” in the words of Fernando Cocchiarale
Notes on taste, demiurge
This exhibition by Gilvan Nunes brings together works in, drawing, recently produced ceramics and porcelain. A considerable part of the works exhibited can be associated with abstractionism, since they are difficult to identify, leading us to search in the title given by the artist to the exhibition greater poetic consistency: Hilomorphism.
This concept takes us back to the thought of Aristotle, more than two thousand years ago, according to which all corporeal beings are composed of matter and form. Nunes' poetics and hylomorphism lead us to contiguous areas such as the question of the demiurge, who worked matter or chaos to give them shape. in Greek thought, particularly in Plato, is a god or the organizing principle of the universe that does not create forms, just models them, based on contemplation of the world of ideas.
The distinction between matter and observable form in the poetic dynamics of the work Gilvan Nunes, other way, seems to be quite close. From this point on, we consider it important for certain games that exercise, feed and produce the poetic invention.
Taste is the criterion or canon used to judge objects of feeling. It was not until the 18th century that taste was recognized as an autonomous faculty., distinct from the theoretical faculty (philosophical and mathematics), since it had its own field and technical thought, fact noticed by Leonardo da Vinci already in the 16th century (“painting is a mental thing ") and, progressively, by Kant and Baumgarten in the 18th century.

About the artist
Gilvan Nunes was born in Vermelho Novo, Minas Gerais, Brasil, in 1966. Always been fascinated by nature, their colors and shapes and spent a lot of time drawing and painting. When he joined the Parque Lage School of Visual Arts, in Rio de Janeiro, in the middle of the years 1980, had the opportunity to interact with other artists of his generation and with teachers who were fundamental to his training. That moment, the renaissance of Brazilian Painting took place and Parque Lage was the epicenter of this movement. Gilvan is widely known for his dense paintings, and also works with drawings, collages and prints of themes invariably related to his vision of the constant transformation of nature. Sculpting and working with ceramics are more recent passions, parallel to the painting. His work has been shown in several group and individual exhibitions., in addition to art fairs in different cities in Brazil, Africa, Europe and USA. In 2017, Gilvan moved to the United States, what inspired the artist to create a new series of oil paintings and glazed ceramics.
Currently, is represented by Galeria Patricia Costa in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, and by InLiquid Gallery in Philadelphia, USA.
