Exclusive exhibition with 22 works will open in 19 November and marks the inauguration of the Gallery in a new space in Jardim Europa
The Mario Cohen Gallery performs, from 19 November to 18 February 2023, to Exhibition Everything Was New Under the Sun of Bahia, by visual artist Mario Cravo Neto. The 22 works exhibited, thirteen have never been published before.
The photographer from Bahia is one of the most important names in Brazilian contemporary photography., internationally recognized and with works exhibited in collections of several countries, like France, United States, spain and holland.
The exhibition was born from the partnership between the Gallery and the Mario Cravo Neto Institute. the artist's son, Christian Cravo, opened the MCN Institute collection, in Salvador, curated by Mario Cohen. In this careful work of selection, Cohen sought less obvious color photographs of the artist, such as the Geometrias series and the colorful portraits of scenes from Bahian culture.
With more than half of the curated images exposed to the public for the first time, the works go back to different phases of the photographer, during the decades of 1970, 1980 and 1990. All works will be sold.
Born and raised in Bahia, the photographer experienced, in the decades of 1950 and 1960, the effervescence of the Bahian art scene, coexisting with great names of national culture such as Jorge Amado, Dorival Caymmi, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Maria Bethania.
Mario Cravo Neto also learned new ways of seeing the beauty of local popular culture with the French anthropologist Pierre Verger, that directly influenced his production. In this way, the topics addressed by him revolve around religiosity, of the Bahian people, of nature and candomblé.
The exhibition also marks the inauguration of the new Mario Cohen Gallery. Founded in 2000, this was the first gallery specialized in fine art photography of Latin America, opens in 10 November your new space, on Captain Francisco Street, 69.
With original design by Isay Weinfeld and updated by architect André Vainer, the new gallery has 137m² and houses an important collection of names such as Cristiano Mascaro, Bob Wolfenson, Ellen von Unwerth, Gui Paganini, TUE+FRI, Norman Parkinson, Pierre Verger, Sebastiao Salgado, among others.
