“Borders”

Dorys Daher presents site specific installation curated by André Sheik

“What goal will you cross today??”, instigates André Sheik, curator of exhibition "Borders", when referring to installation site specific that the sculptor Dorys Daher presents, from 21 July, at Centro Cultural Correios RJ. when lifting, floor to ceiling, a barrier with two sides of diametrically opposite materials and characteristics – a rough and opaque, another smooth and shiny -, the artist proposes to simulate a kind of tear in space, exposing a motto that is not restricted to the physical and visual aspect. The large work (4M high, 4,60m wide and 10m long) completely fills the right foot of the exhibition space, opposing sheets of polished aluminum to dark strips of coarse sandpaper.

In most of its production, Dorys points out oppositions, usually presented in contrasting materials, that tend to harmonize. The artist likes to look at different sides of the same issue., proposing that many of them depend on the point of view from which one observes. “Our perspective is conditioned to our experiences, to our experiences”, defend her.

Consisting of four strips of polished aluminum (1m wide and 8 m long, each) and eighteen strips of coarse sandpaper (23 cm wide and 8 meters long each), the installation will be placed between the iron columns of the room, fixed by metal rivets on the iron joists. As you approach the work, the public will be invited to look up. Individuals become simple in front of the installation and will observe the dialogues proposed in “Fronteiras”, started above, at a distance. Counting on more than twice the height of the skyline, the scale is not a purely plastic choice.

This is another metaphorical device., as the artist explains:

“Space is the core of my sculptural and architectural production by the artist from Goiás based in Rio de Janeiro. The two creative fronts complement each other, enabling a unique approach to the aesthetic-social dimensions that involve sculpture and architecture. The idea is to critically articulate space to other geographic concepts such as, territory and landscape, to highlight the dimensions that connect and differentiate them”.

As a kind of transitory monument, Dorys Daher's work is contextualized among the series of movements that have been questioning the stability of the conceptions of History that built western civilization from modernity. More virtual – like borders – or less virtual – like architecture –, they have been conditioning the bonds that individuals and social groups build with each other.

Learn more about Dorys Daher

Artist from Goiás based in Rio de Janeiro, Dorys Daher was born in 1958, in the municipality of Ipameri-GO, where he spent his childhood and part of his adolescence. Came to Rio de Janeiro (where do you live until today), started at the Faculty of Physics and, later, graduated in Architecture and Urbanism. Your hometown, whose name comes from the Tupi-Guarani, is between rivers and welcomed their grandparents fleeing World War I. At the beginning of the 20th century, the location was strongly influenced by foreign immigrants from different origins: Spanish, German, Portuguese, italians, czechs, japanese, syrians and lebanese. The transit experience is marked in Dorys' life, that keeps, in memory, stories – which he has heard since he was a child – of the immigration of his ancestors.

"Fonteiras", according to the curator

There are countless types and shapes of borders. they can be apparent, like a trace on the floor, fences, walls, rivers and mountains, for example. But have, also, the invisible ones, like cultural differences, language or insurmountable ideals. Each context has its own demarcation risks. Now, almost everything is on the potential imminence of altering, change state, pass from one side to the other. And there are those who live between worlds. Some limits are malleable. Sometimes, to overcome an obstacle, it is necessary to get around it.

Border also means the maximum point that can be reached. However, it is an undefined place., since unreachable. where are the edges (or the folds) do Cosmos? The human imagination has no end, although some ideas seem inconceivable to us. What separates light from darkness? According to the Standard Model of Physics, light appeared a millionth of a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang, the explosion that would have given rise to the current shape of our Universe.
