The film «The Woman in the Window», the new success of Netflix, addresses agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder. O PhD, neuroscientist and neuropsychologist Fabiano de Abreu explains what the disease is, as well as diagnosis and treatment.

Second Fabiano de Abreu, no new disorders are emerging, but the current social condition ends up resulting in the approach of little talked about diseases, as with agoraphobia. The pathology is highlighted in the film «A Mulher na Janela», one of the most viewed productions currently on the platform of streaming Netflix Portugal and Brazil.

In the work, Anna Fox, main character played by actress Amy Adams, has agoraphobia. From the window of your mansion, in New York City, she watched life in the city until she ends up witnessing a crime, an event that aggravates your disorder.

Fabiano de Abreu considers that the film draws a parallel with real life: “Agophobia is a type of anxiety that is even relatively common, but ends up being triggered by the occurrence of some episodes of panic attacks. An individual with this disorder tends to stay indoors., because you are afraid to go out, since he considers it to be dangerous, even not being". For the neuroscientist, the work interestingly presents the fear and seclusion that are the result of a trauma related to the loss. the seclusion, in this sense, happens due to fear of being in places or situations that might trigger panic attacks or embarrassment.

Agoraphobia is a chronic illness that can last for years or a lifetime.. Among people with this type of disorder, 30 to 50% also suffer from panic disorder. The disease affects more women than men., in a relationship of 2 for 1. The main symptoms are fears related to being in a crowd., face ranks, closed places, public transport, open spaces and solitude.

“Situations are anticipated in the imagination and are triggered by a simple fear of what might or might not happen.. The person makes a projection of a reality that, mostly, will not happen", explains.

Most cases arise before the 35 years of age and the diagnosis is made for a period of six months or more. During this time, the doctor or psychologist accompanies the patient, assessing the level of fear and anxiety. If the anxiety does not subside, treatments begin.

The process is challenging, as it is performed through exposure therapy, in which the individual is helped to learn new ways of behaving in situations that give rise to fear. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is also part of the process., the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants may be necessary (ISRSs).
