Rodrigo de Castro: Between Shapes and Colors”
For the first time, artist features steel sculptures with automotive paint, plus recent screens, at the Patricia Costa Gallery, curated by Vanda Klabin
Known for the precise brushstrokes that explore the chromatic field with geometric lines, Rodrigo de Castro allowed himself to transit, for the first time in his career, between the plane and three-dimensionality.
As he himself defined, will be revealing his facet of “painter making sculptures”: after six years without exhibiting a solo show in Rio de Janeiro, the artist will show here, unpublished, steel sculptures with automotive paint – in addition to large and medium format paintings recently completed -, is individual “Rodrigo de Castro: Between Shapes and Colors”.
Who follows the artist's trajectory, you will also be surprised by the new series of black canvases intersected by discreet lines of color.
In exhibition opening at Galeria Patrícia Costa, on 8 August, curated by Vanda Klabin, it is possible to see how the narrowing of the dialogue with painting originated the sculptures (some measuring 1,20 by 1,20 meters), that gained scale for a better perception of space and color.
“The matter interaction (steel)- color, became color space. In both cases, the light brings movement and the geometric structures of painting to the sculptures.”, explains Rodrigo de Castro.
It was by observing the vibration of colors on the screens that everything began: “I looked and realized, felt that, in certain paintings, the color seemed to come out of the plane, as if gaining volume by the intense vibration. So I decided to research this path and understand what color would be in space. How to stand a blue?”, complements.
“The recent production by Rodrigo de Castro combines the articulation of the pictorial plane with a process of lines and shapes that translate intense units and reveal his direct confrontation with painting.. The structuring elements of his work derive from pictorial thinking founded on the contrasts of color fields and arranged in a game of geometric derivations., establishing a fertile and indissoluble association”, assesses curator and historian Vanda Klabin, longtime friend of the great artist and sculptor Amílcar de Castro, Rodrigo's father.
“The contrasts between opacity and brightness, allied to the coloring field and the strong presence of a geometric ordering, bring greater materiality to his work, which now unfolds on a three-dimensional plane”.
