“Festival Toriba Musical” this Saturday's attraction is the opera “Domitila”, by João Guilherme Ripper

The Festival Toriba Musical this week’s main attraction is an opera recital “Domitila”.

The presentation takes place on Saturday, 2 of October, às 19h30.

On “stage”, the Sala da Lareira do Hotel Toriba, will be an italian soprano Maria Sole Gallevi, and instrumental group formed by Daniel Oliveira, clarinet, Fabrício Rodrigues, cello, Alexsander Ribeiro de Lara, piano.

It will be the first presentation of “Domitila” in Campos do Jordão and the entire Paraíba Valley region.

All shows in the Festival Toriba Musical are performed live and attended by an audience. It should be highlighted, are carried out following all Covid-19 prevention protocols recommended by health authorities and official bodies.

They are free for guests of the Toriba. For non-guests, tickets at R$ 50,00.

Forbiden love - With music and text by the composer from Rio João Guilherme Ripper, “Domitila” was composed in 2000.

The work is based on letters exchanged between Emperor D. Pedro I and his lover, Domitila de Castro do Canto e Melo, the Marquesa de Santos - the noble title of marquise was given to him by the emperor in 1826.

Correspondence covers the first messages, with Emperor gallantry, goes through moments of great intimacy and reaches the sad outcome of the relationship. “Domitila, my empress. Since I set my eyes on your beauty, I wanted to be all and always yours. You want, divine august, my thought? These verses are for you, My love”, wrote Dom Pedro.

Letters are a living document of forbidden love. There are reports that more than two hundred letters were exchanged between Domitila and D. Pedro I. Only 143 of them were documented, and many of which are no longer found - would have been eliminated. It stayed in the history of Brazil and it bore fruit, that provoked a dichotomy in the Royal Family: the couple had four children, of which two girls survived.
