Exhibition "My land has palm trees" gathers 40 works of 15 artists at Caixa Cultural São Paulo

Shows discussing the formation of the country's cultural memory from the poem "Song of the Exile", Goncalves Dias

The CAIXA Cultural São Paulo receives, from 12 th November of 2019 to 19 January 2020, the exhibition "My land has palm trees". Curated by Bruno Miguel, the show brings together 40 works of 15 Brazilian contemporary artists to discuss the formation of the country's cultural memory. The exhibition is sponsored by CAIXA and the Federal Government.

works are displayed Afonso Tostes, Anna Bella Geiger, Armando Queiroz, Ayrson Heraclitus, Carlos Zilio, Daniel Murgel, Flávia Junqueira, Ivan Grilo, Jaime Lauriano, Marcos Cardoso, Raquel Versieux, Rodrigo Braga, Rodrigo Andrade, Vicente de Mello and Virginia Medeiros, a cutout of a few decades of Brazilian contemporary art.

The exhibition's starting point is the poem "Song of the Exile", the first time icon of Brazilian romanticism, written by Gonçalves Dias in 1857. Traveling through different media, as paint, photography, engraving, drawing, sculpture, installation, object and assemblage, these artists invite the public to a reflection on national identity, its romantic origins in the nineteenth century to the present day.

Stories and memories:

The curator Bruno Miguel points out that artists tell stories and create memories - visual and poetic - on aspects that usually go unnoticed by most. According to him, one of the main objectives of the exhibition is precisely relate the plurality of a Brazil of artistic thought fields varied with topics such as memory, political and ancestry.

"Distance is space and time. Remembrance is lived experience, or not, by himself or by another ", explains the curator. "Not only individuals remember things, but also groups, societies and nations. Remembering and forgetting are now recognized as important aspects of both living together in society and also politics ", complete.

ON CULTURAL BOX: The CAIXA Cultural São Paulo offers a diverse programming, with free options, encouraging inclusion and citizenship. The space is located in a historic building in Cathedral Square, built in style "Art Deco" and opened in 1939. Has four galleries, Great hall, auditorium and workshop room. In 2018, presented 40 cultural and educational projects such as dance performances, theater, shows, debates, dramatic readings, workshops and lectures. The area also houses the Museum of CAIXA, a permanent exhibition that has facilities and many original objects, preserved since the late 40, keeping alive the history of the institution and a time of São Paulo and Brazil.
