How do we think about what we want for the future based on what we live? Memories of the Future – A Look at the IHGB Collectionpresents items from the collection of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute to the capixaba public.
Curated by Marco Lucchesi, is a exhibition original: in eleven spaces, displays an extensive overview of the country's history through maps, historical documents and objects, some never shown to the public, that encourage visitors to recognize themselves, through his own memories and discoveries.
in the assembly, the collection will dialogue with the contemporary art of four artists from Espírito Santo, who created new works for the exhibition. The show occupies the exhibition space of the Anchieta Palace between days 13 April and 18 of June. Admission is free, by appointment on the websitewww.museuvale.com.
Memories of the Future is an initiative of the Vale Cultural Institute / Valley Museum, in partnership with the Government of the State of Espírito Santo, and sponsorship by Vale, by Federal Law for Promotion of Culture.
“The structure of the show rests on the invention of Brazil. invent-it, in the ancient and modern sense: walk to the 'encounter' of Brazil; or project it into future dimension. First: the IHGB, weighing tradition and rupture, determined legacy of the past and the restless engines of the present. Second: the projection, the imaginary, the conjunction of times, the redesign of the country… Within this double invention – of those who find and subvert, who gathers and transforms –, the non-negotiable presence of contemporary art emerges. Burning in the questions. Urgent in demands. Various languages and supports, in a multicentric posture”, explains Marco Lucchesi.
“This is an exhibition that highlights the importance of revisiting our History, recreating memories from contact with art, and arrives in Vitória as a unique experience, enriched by the collaboration of Espírito Santo artists in the construction of new narratives. enable children, young, audiences of all ages have contact with these historical records, and build new perspectives and reflections on them, reinforces the role of the museum in the service of education”, says Hugo Barreto, President of the Vale Cultural Institute.
The works of four contemporary capixaba artists represent a dialogue between past and future. Andreia Falqueto, Jocimar Nalesso, Juliana Pessoa and Luciano Feijão (biographies and more about the works below) were invited by Ronaldo Barbosa, director of Museu Vale and curator of contemporary art, to produce new works for the exhibition.
“Bringing four contemporary artists from Espírito Santo to immerse themselves and produce their works in parallel with the preparation of environments for setting up the exhibition, among the sounds of everyday life, executive work and the palatial silence at night, it was a rich and interesting experience from the point of view of creation. In this joint work process, four new and instigating works of different themes and techniques appeared, creating a current dialogue with items from the IHGB collection”, account Ronaldo Barbosa.
EXHIBITION THEMES
The show is divided into 11 devices – which are built on a general and non-historical principle of succession and cause, following an aesthetic spatial distribution: The Mother Earth; The Baptism of Things; The invention of Brazil; The Book of Memory; Nation Made of Nations; black liberty; Republic of Ethnic Groups; Conflict: Engine of History; Democracy and Its Enemies; Hope is the Matter of History; and Diversity will save Brazil.
Paulo Knauss, vice president of IHGB, talks about the importance of holding this exhibition in Vitória, with the participation of artists from the state: “The exhibition is characterized as a special opportunity for, in the light of capixaba history, review the tradition of thinking about national unity from its political center, that was Rio de Janeiro. In other words, It is about emphasizing the diversity of the Brazil experienced and affirming the plurality of Brazilian society based on history”.
A revisit to the historical records of the IHGB, institution dedicated to the preservation of the country's cultural heritage created in 1838 – began his career in 2021 at MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio, with clippings from this collection resignified in the exhibition “Images that do not conform”. Beyond Rio and Espírito Santo, this route also extends to Pará, Maranhão and Minas Gerais.
the guest artists
Andrea Falqueto, painter, presents the universe of mangroves on the island of Vitória with a man in the foreground, typical brazilian, crab catcher, whose expressive face makes us reflect on his story. She works to the rhythm of confident, light-filled, multicolored brushstrokes., perceptions and subtleties of the urban scene.
Luciano Beans, strong and expressive drawing artist, counterpoints the show with its focal theme, the african diaspora. In “Memories of the Future” recreate yourself body and soul, in a kind of ritual of strength, magic and energy, bringing on a large scale his gesture imbued with conscience and freedom.
Juliana Person draws and represents figures that are always arriving or leaving. They are ordinary people who have lived life. The artist brings to the exhibition a character that could belong to the IHGB collection, Dona Josefa, heiress of Canudos, bearing the marks of its own history on its face.
Jocimar Nalesso paints dialoguing with the renaissance perspective, an environment of stairs that take us to a hidden place. Doors that merge and deepen in a calm painting with the blues of the vernacular architecture of the mountainous regions of Espírito Santo. His work participates in the space from the entrance hall to the environment.

Educational program and training of young apprentices
As part of your social contribution, the Vale Museum has held since 2005 the training project for young people from communities in the Greater Vitória Region, the call Apprentice program. Focused on setting up exhibitions in spaces such as museums and galleries, the course, in addition to theoretical knowledge about carpentry, painting, lighting and others, enables practical learning during the assembly process of the exhibitions that the museum holds.
The 10 young people selected in the Apprentice Program/2023 – who participated in the setting up of “The extraordinary universe of Leonardo da Vinci – now they help the team of professional assemblers in the construction of the exhibition “Memories of the Future – A Look at the Collection of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute”. With this initiative, the Vale Museum reiterates its belief in changing and transforming lives through the paths provided by culture.
Another important activity of the Museum is the Educational Program. At the exhibition, the experiences of each visitor will be worked on, stimulating the memories engraved in their memories, based on important events in their lives: travels, family gatherings, childhood stories etc.. The goal, obviously, is to show the relevance of these memories in the history of each one, in the same way that the IHGB collection is indispensable for the history of the country.
Playful activities are part of the process. And, by creating an image, visitors could tell their own story? For groups with children under 10 years, the approach will have as a starting point the representation of what they like to do, what images represent these desires?
The expectation with the realization of this experience is that, throughout the exhibition, make a big wall, kind of "patchwork quilt" where all our stories and facts are added, a collection of memories, of visitors and the exhibition.
