Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo – BUT/SP, institution of the Department of Culture and Economy of the State of São Paulo Creative, presents the exhibitionGenesis according to Eve”, artist Eva Soban, under the curatorship of Denise Mattar, composed of 15 elements in woven forms which present the myth of Creation of the World and the saga of Forbidden Fruit from the artist's point of view. “The purpose of the exhibition is to instigate a reflection on the fundamental need to face challenges and prohibitions, that has always guided human choices – for good and for evil”, curator defines.

a century ago, in the early days of the Modernist movement, the artist Regina Gomide Graz inserted “textile making” as an artistic form in the visual arts segment and it is from this source that she feeds Eva Soban to create unique works, delicate but with pre-determined messages and concepts resulting from constant research and study. The artist has been dedicated to the subject for a long time – “In the last year I felt an internal appeal, a need for light. We are living moments of life x death, tearing apart. Surrounded by questionable beliefs and thoughts. I felt this need to go back to the origins and try to understand.”

Eva Soban narrates the first chapters of Genesis using threads, taking advantage of its flexibility, tension and elasticity, to present a creative reading of the biblical account. The different textures it uses, and variations from plane to three-dimensional, reveal all the bond and ancestral power that the fiber can evoke without losing its contemporaneity. The installation parallels current theological analysis, who sees in Genesis a synthesis “of universal concerns about the origin of man and his world, the evils that afflict you, and the dangers that threaten it”. ‘let there be light’, it's God's first action, and the artist imagines what the Void would be like, the Divine Light manifesting itself and breaking through the darkness. “Think about the textures and plasticity of galaxies, with your stars, gas and dust, bound by an invisible force. And just like that builds the first act of creation: in black layers, with loose wires, invisibly linked, a fabric without fabric, with sparkles and subtle colors that overlap, producing new colors”, explains Denise Mattar.

Inserted in the newly created garden, emerge to Tree of Life – colorful and tempting, with many fruits and flowers, representing the abundance offered to man; and the Knowledge Tree, of good and evil, the forbidden tree, black, with a single fruit, with all the energies that drive human life. This paradox leaves questions unanswered… Why Knowledge would be denied to the Human Being? Why Men Preferred to Face Divine Prohibition? Would God have denied Knowledge to spare men from Pain? As a possible answer to the questions that actually represent the incessant struggle that humanity must wage against the forces of evil, a relentless fight where, sometimes, the man is a winner. This redemption, almost always temporary, closes the exhibition and is represented by a shower of golden fruits – Forbidden Fruit – now transparent, soft, multiform – and freed from the ground.

Eva Soban part of the pioneer generation that, in the 1970, opened up new possibilities for flexible media, creating sculptural and three-dimensional fiber works, that overthrew the plastering of the then existing artistic categories. Your diverse approach to textiles, used as a vehicle for their creativity, places her among our most interesting artists.” Denise Mattar

Eva Soban (São Paulo, SP) begins its involvement with the universe of the arts, through photography and painting. However, his innate desire for manual work and his interest in researching the weaving – primordial act of man – made him replace the camera and brushes with threads and wefts. In his most recent works, creates textile sculptures exploring unusual materials and new forms, seeking a renewed vigor to his creation and art in general.
