Luiz Paulo Baravelli
BARAVELLI 80 is a exhibition organized by the Stickel Foundation in collaboration with the Marcelo Guarnieri Gallery, which celebrates the 80 years of the artist Luiz Paulo Baravelli. On this occasion, are presented 57 works of the artist, each corresponding to one of its 57 year career, since 1965 until 2022.
Paintings, drawings and reliefs that show your interest in architecture, through the drawing of the human figure and the landscape painting, and that propose a relaxed dialogue with the traditional. To keep company with your works, Baravelli summoned “friends and neighbors”, what according to him, were – and still are – his guides and advisors throughout his career..
About of 200 images of architects works, artists, cartoonists and designers presented in the exhibition in video format are able to bring the visiting public closer to the artist's repertoire, which ranges from a painting by Giotto de 1304, a sculpture by Barbara Hepworth of 1943, the still of a scene from the cartoon “Bones Jetsons” from 1962, to a 2005 Martin Puryear sculpture.
Graduated architect and acclaimed as a painter, Baravelli experiments with three-dimensional space, both not physical field, as in the virtual field of his paintings and drawings. Their Works, the notions of perspective, plant, elevation and section from the language of architecture are used to represent interior spaces, houses and other buildings, but not restricted to the trace, become tools to question the square shape of the screen, giving his paintings a certain dynamism.
It is in this way that they transit between two and three dimensions and acquire the hybrid character of painting-object.. They may have recognizable contours such as a slender human body or strange contours such as fat, oversized eyelids kissing., round contours that claim their place within the frame’s tradition and even the squares that house other squares and squares within the frame’s limits.
Baravelli makes up in layers, cut and overwrite references, styles, materials and textures. Such operations are loaded with a sense of humor that has allowed the artist to establish a spirited relationship with his work in these 57 years of production and which is evident in the ways of approaching issues as diverse as love, the history of art, Power figures such as politicians and collectors, urban planning problems and the feeling of boredom of a night like any other.
are not themes, are questions that cross any of us, and that in Baravelli's work appear as unusual comments, more subtle, of those who could go unnoticed in a conversation with the most inattentive. It was not for nothing that his friends and neighbors were invited to participate in this exhibition., are voices that amplify the dialogue, adding layers of meaning and opening bridges to other conversations.
We joyfully celebrate the eighty years of the life of an artist who dedicated fifty-seven years to an activity of such great importance to our culture., forming so many generations of artists, students, readers and which is a fundamental part of our country's art history. And with the same joy, we celebrate the opportunity to have been together for the last thirty years. Viva Baravelli!
