In this issue, international festival in Costa Verde Fluminense honors Walter Firmo, who already confirmed his presence being interviewed by Sergio Burgi, Photography Coordinator at Instituto Moreira Salles.
With the theme, “From Film to Artificial Intelligence”, the 19º Paraty in Focus – International Festival of Photography, your edition arrives 2023 maintaining the proposal to celebrate the past and discuss the directions of photography, showcasing established professionals and making room for emerging talents.
“Photography lives a very stimulating moment: on the other hand, the rescue of the movie; another, the artificial intelligence, that many consider a threat to photography itself. This will be the main debate of the Festival”, says, Giancarlo Mecarelli, photographer, creator and director and one of the curators of Paraty em Foco.
Registration open until 13 August, the Call in Focus, that attracts photographers from different countries of the world, is another highlight of the Festival, which selects and exhibits works in three categories: Single Photos, Essays and Selfies – with open-air exhibition at Quadra da Matriz, one of the noble points of the Historic Center of the city of Paraty.
An open window for new talents, or even consecrated professionals to exhibit their production, with images selected by a jury of great photography professionals. Registration through the site – www.pefparatyemfoco.com.br – in the Call for Focus tabs 2023 and Selfies in Focus.
Confirmed in the official agenda of the Historic City for the period 13 to 17 September (Wednesday to Sunday), the 19º Paraty in Focus announces this edition's great honoree, the photographer and “master of color”, Walter company name.

“Firmo built a dense and essential work, with a solid presence in the press and in authorial photography, which resulted in a vast collection of more than 140 thousand images”, are the words of Sergio Burgi, photography coordinator at Instituto Moreira Salles, for the honoree. Burgi will also participate in the Festival, interviewing Firmo himself in the “Meetings and Interviews”.
With extensive programming, the guest list already has big names confirmed, such as: junior light, specialist in creating images with artificial intelligence; Monica Zarattini, Photojournalist, photo editor and researcher; Luiz Bhering, Graduated in Photography from the City Polytechnic School of Arts and Designer in London; Miriam Ramalho, independent photographer and author of two books; and Silvestre Machado, contributor for decades to national and foreign image banks. “It is worth mentioning that Miriam and Silvestre, in addition to the quality of work, have another thing in common: the two had photos classified in our Call in Focus”, declares Giancarlo.
Involving the Paraty community in the event is a permanent objective of the Paraty em Foco. In partnership with some institutions, the Festival promotes photography courses, guided tours to exhibitions and workshops with openings for residents and students from the municipal network. “In addition to promoting cultural tourism, Paraty em Foco is aligned with the objectives for sustainable development”, explained Maxime Delmotte, also event director.
19º Paraty em Foco intends to promote another remarkable event, attracting an audience eager for art and culture in beautiful Paraty – which, in addition to the Festival itself,, has its own attractions, such as the historic houses of the islands and the paradisiacal beaches. "Our goal, in addition to giving photography the prominence it deserves, it is collaborating with tourism and economic development, cultural and social life of our dear Historic City”, concludes Mecarelli.
