After the painter Raffaello Sanzio cycle “Italian-Brazilian dialogues” organized by the Italian Cultural Institute of Rio de Janeiro brings the national launch of the book Migration and Intolerance, by Umberto Eco in a debate broadcast live on facebook (www.facebook.com/iicrio)
Brazilian philosopher Marcia Tiburi and Italian journalist Cristina Taglietti will be the protagonists of the event that will be moderated by the researched Clodoaldo Meneguello Cardoso, Professor of Ethics and Philosophy and Coordinator of the Human Rights Education Observatory at Universidade Estadual Paulista UNESP.
The meeting to be held on Tuesday, 23 of June, will be broadcast at noon (17h italianas) in Italian and Portuguese.
Continuing the cycle “Italian-Brazilian dialogues”, that gathers writers, intellectuals, literary critics and artists from Italy and Brazil around themes of common interest, the Italian Institute of Culture of Rio de Janeiro and the Editora Record promote in Tuesday, 23 of June, the book launch Migration and Intolerance, from Umberto Eco, in a debate with the participation of brasileira philosopher Marcia Tiburi, author of, among others, How to talk to a fascist, and the Italian journalist Cristina Taglietti, and moderation of researcher Clodoaldo Meneguello Cardoso, from Universidade Estadual Paulista – UNESP. The meeting will be broadcast live at noon (17h, in Rome time) on the Facebook of the Italian Institute of Culture – www.facebook.com/iicrio, in Italian and Portuguese. The vision manifested by Umberto Eco in each of the essays gathered in the book is the topic of the meeting.
“We want to promote with the series “Italo-Brazilian dialogues” an exchange between Brazilian and Italian exponents of the intellectual milieu, editorial news and new cultural and artistic projects originating in Italy, with strong potential for interest to the Brazilian public. The idea is to share and stimulate experiences, aiming to intensify cultural and artistic relations between Brazil and Italy ”, says Livia Raponi, director of the Italian Institute of Culture of Rio de Janeiro.
The book Migration and Intolerance, edited in Brazil by Editora Record, one of the main publishing groups in Latin America, can serve as a guide to understand the political-social scenario of this delicate historical moment in which misunderstandings and retrograde ideas seem to thrive.
The Initiative Italian Institute of Culture occurs in association with manifestation II Maggio dei Libri, promoted by the Center for Books and Reading (Cepell) of the Ministry for the Goods and Cultural Activities of Italy and has the collaboration of the magazine La Lettura, Italian cultural do jornal supplement Corriere della Sera.

Cristina Taglietti has been writing for over twenty years for the cultural pages of the main Italian daily, the Corriere della Sera (founded in Milan in 1876) and for the literary notebook Reading, since its first publication. Writes about Italian and foreign literature, dedicating himself to stories and editorial analysis. She is the author of the book Cover flaps. I travel to 14 Italian publishing houses (Cover Ears. Travel in 14 Italian Publishers) published by Laterza.
Marcia Tiburi, filosofa, is the author of important works for contemporary critical thinking, such as feminism in common: for all, all and sundry (Rose of the Times), Political ridicule: an investigation into the laughable, image manipulation and aesthetically correct (Record) and How to talk to a fascist: reflections on the Brazilian authoritarian daily life (Record). Participated in the elections of 2018 as a candidate for governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, by the Workers' Party (EN). Columnist of Revista CULT.
Clodoaldo Meneguello Cardoso: is a professor of ethics and philosophy, retired, to FAAC – Faculty of architecture, Arts and Communication, Unesp-Campus of Bauru. He carried out his post-doctorate as a researcher associated with the LEI-Laboratory of Intolerance Studies – FFLCH-USP. He currently chairs the Management Committee of the Observatory on Human Rights Education at Unesp and edits the Interdisciplinary Journal of Human Rights. He is the author, among other, of the book: Tolerance and its limits (Edunesp).

It's another brilliant reflection by Umberto Eco against prejudice and discrimination. Discussions about the great migratory flows that we have seen recently and the intolerant stance of many towards migrants have forced the world, in particular the countries of Europe, confronting its own history and values. The four essays that make up this work invite the reader to think about these themes, today even more current and urgent than at the time when the texts were written.
On these pages, Eco explains the differences between the phenomena of “migration” and “immigration”, pointing out its characteristics and consequences, in addition to explaining the nuances between fundamentalism, fundamentalism, racism and intolerance, dealing with its dangers in the contemporary world. The author maintains that “mutual understanding between different cultures does not mean assessing what the other must renounce in order to become equal, but understand each other what separates us and accept this diversity”. And it presents arguments to demonstrate that “eliminating racism does not mean demonstrating and convincing yourself that Others are no different from us, but understand and accept them in their diversity”.
