Donations of books for the Tubotecas benefit dozens of institutions

In addition to ensuring a collection always renewed, community participation with book donations for Tubotecas also helps to supply more than forty institutions in Curitiba and in the Metropolitan Region. Since 2013, were 163.166 donated books, of these 122.262 were destined for Tubotecas. The remaining, around 40 thousand works, was passed on to community libraries, NGOs, neighborhood associations, schools, hospitals and prisons.

According to Patricia Wolke, manager of the literary spaces of the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba, campaigns for the tubotecas doubled the number of books received. The possibility of taking donations to other places “allows the works to circulate in various places in the city, encouraging reading throughout Curitiba and the Metropolitan Region”, the firm.

“There is a growing interest from institutions in their own reading spaces”, tell Patricia. The Bairro Alto Women's Association is an example. With own library, the donation of textbooks helps young people in the community to look for references for school work. Edigar Simei is one of the Association's collaborators and helps students choose the best books to consult. “It’s a way of making them reflect, seeking other sources besides the internet”, reminds edigar.

In the Community Library of Vila Torres something similar happens. The children take advantage of donated children's books for a moment of leisure and learning. “Books can be borrowed or used permanently by children, which is also important to ensure the habit of reading at home”, comment Claudio Gomes, library contributor. Even more copies are used there, as even worn-out books are directed to community recycling spaces.

All donations go through a service that has always been carried out by the Literature sector of the Cultural Foundation of Curitiba: the reception, sanitation, screening and distribution of books donated by the community. With this procedure, all books received have a certain and adequate destination according to the fields of interest of new readers.

Book donations can be made on any equipment maintained by the Cultural Foundation, at Reading Houses, at the Foundation's headquarters (Rua Rebouças Engineers, 1.732 -Raheem), not Ippuk (Rua Bom Jesus, 669 -(Juventus) and at City Hall (Avenida Cândido de Abreu, 817 - Civic Center).
