Instituto Tomie Ohtake and AkzoNobel continue to map contemporary architectural production, when highlighting, for the ninth year in a row, projects significant constructions in the current Brazilian panorama. The novelty is that, beyond the category Professional, the ninth edition reintroduces the category university, which was part of the sixth edition of the award, held in 2019. registrations (free) must be done online, from 25 October to 01 th December 2022, no site, in which there is complete information about the award, including public notice and platform for the registration of projects.

Architectural professionals of Brazilian or foreign nationality who have lived in Brazil for at least five years and who present projects built during the last ten years can apply., as well as regularly enrolled or newly graduated higher education students (until 2 years) in higher-level architecture courses recognized or authorized by the MEC, Brazilians or foreigners residing in the country for at least one year.

There are four fundamental criteria that will guide the selection of 10 projects in the Professional category of the 9th Tomie Ohtake AkzoNobel Architecture Award: the use of activating technologies that allow updates or interpretations of materials, constructive methods, sustainable aspects, knowledge and memories; works that encompass innovations in everyday life impacting the daily lives of communities and ensuring optimization of uses, circulation and recreational aspects for different social groups; ephemeral or permanent projects that prioritize expression, action and action in the territory; and still color.

Students who are interested in the University category should submit their projects based on the theme “Memoirs, transformations and resistances in territories and/or landscapes”. The provocation launched seeks to stimulate views on possibilities of action in territories from research developed in the academic field and that unfold in design practices. This edition's jury, formed by Carol Tonetti, Catherine Otondo, Clevio Rabelo, Esther Car and Thais Troncon Rosa, will be responsible for the selection of the ten works selected among the Professionals and three more among the University Students, who will participate in the exhibition at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake, scheduled to take place in May 2023. At the opening of the event, three award-winning projects in the Professional category and one in the University category will be announced.

Since its first edition (2014), the Tomie Ohtake AkzoNobel Architecture Prize received 1.579 registered projects, coming from 21 states and the Federal District. In the last edition, in 2022, the three winners were Daniel Mangabeira da Vinha, Henrique Eduardo Caldas Coutinho and Matheus Conque Seco Ferreira (BLOCK Architects) with the project Casa Palicourea (Alto Paraíso de Goiás – GO); Laurent Troost (Laurent Troost Architectures) with the project Cassina Innovation House (Manaus – AM) and Fernando Maculan Assumpção and Joana César Magalhães (RAISE Favelinha) with the project Cultural Center Lá da Favelinha (Belo Horizonte – MG).  in the last edition, architects Adriano Andrade Carneiro de Mendonça and Antonio Pedro S L Ribeiro Coutinho (Floor Studio) to Honorable Mention by the project overflows! (Rio de Janeiro - RJ). already Honorable Mention Sustainability was dedicated to Honey's House (Canaã dos Carajás - PA), Christian Teshirogi's design (flume study), while the Honorable Mention Color was won by the project Houses + MBV2 Mixed Building (Sobral – CE), designed by Bruno Melo Braga, Bruno Perdigao de Oliveira, Igor Lima Ribeiro and Luiz Mattoso Cattony (Architects Network).

About the Prize

The Award seeks to recognize outstanding architectural productions in the Brazilian contemporary scene, valuing innovative ways of thinking and building social space, contributing, and, with the design of the current panorama of national architecture in its most varied contexts. The selected projects participate in the exhibition at Instituto Tomie Ohtake and are presented in a catalog. The winning works will be recorded with an experimental and analytical video of the building made by a filmmaker at the beginning of his career. The Tomie Ohtake Institute, founded in 2001, is the only place in the city dedicated to the plastic arts, architecture and design, with an architectural project specially developed to house these three expressions of the visual arts.
