“Holy song of thanksgiving for the visit of the Prince Regent”
Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo – BUT/SP, institution of the Department of Culture and Economy of the State of São Paulo Creative, displays the exhibition “YOU GODS” in commemoration of the bicentennial of Independence. Curated by Beatriz Cruz and John Rossi, the exhibition recalls a customary liturgical act, at the time, used for the reception of both political and ecclesiastical authorities.

On 14 August 1822, the Prince Regent began the journey of 634 km, starting at Quinta da Boa Vista, in Rio de Janeiro, along the Real Estrada de Santa Cruz to São Paulo, where would it get 12 days after. All stops on the route – Lorena, Guaratinguetá, Pindamonhangaba, Taubaté, jacarei, Mogi das Cruzes – had been strategically planned in its passage through the Vale do Paraíba, one of the country's economic engines at the time, so that he could meet with local leaders and establish alliances. at the moment in question, the trip – which would extend for almost a month – was important from a political point of view. The province of São Paulo was going through a troubled moment, with a principle of mutiny in which part of the elite threatened to refuse to carry out orders from the capital. As the journey progressed, the entourage of 5 members who started the journey, arrives at the destination with much more than 30, since people are joining it along the way. The group arrives in São Paulo in the morning of the 25 of August where he attends mass in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha. YOU GODS
“Welcoming Prince Dom Pedro and his entourage, after the journey of 13 days coming from Rio de Janeiro, the ancient religious custom - YOU GODS – took place in the church of Sé, in the bishopric of Dom Matheus de Abreu Pereira, where the Prince Regent was received with great solemnity”, explains the curator John Rossi. This solemn act, still used in important ceremonies, was explained by Pope Benedict XVI: “no ‘You gods’ is contained a deep wisdom, that wisdom that leads us to say that, after all, there is good in the world, and this good is destined to win thanks be to God, the God of Jesus Christ incarnate, dead and risen”. In 25 August 1822, the anthem of Te Deum (To you God we praise), intoned at solemn thanksgiving events, was conducted by the chapel master of the Sé André da Silva Gomes in honor of Dom Pedro and his entourage. Como colonial costume, sung prayers have always had great artistic and cultural importance in Brazil. Great composers of these pieces made history in Brazilian music, like the Master of Chapel of the Old Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, The Jose Maurice Nunes Garcia, his contemporary in São Paulo, André da Silva Gomes, composed and conducted many liturgical acts in the Old Cathedral of São Paulo, exemplifies John Rossi.
in the exhibition of Museum of sacred art, relics from the Old Cathedral and other historical pieces and furniture make up the ambiance of the Primatial Church of São Paulo, producing an atmosphere that evokes the Old Cathedral of São Paulo, offering the visitor the sensation of being present at the public reception ceremony of the future Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro. A piece that takes the place of the main altar used in the old church, will be adorned with original pieces from the ceremony such as torches, palmas, imaginary, ornaments and furniture belonging to the museum's collection. Mannequins dressed in replicas of period clothing, make up the nave of the church.
No opening, some special actions are programmed that emulate the events of the occasion: presentation of the MAS choir conducted by conductor Denise Castilho Cocareli, a volley of gunfire and the church bells in the neighborhood of Luz singing the same melody, at the same time. The snacks were selected according to research on the delicacies of the time.: chicken drumstick, couscous Paulista, fried cassava and cashew juice, much appreciated by all.

Good morning. Please, I would like to know more information about the screen of d. Pedro I exhibited at the Te Deum exhibition. Study the iconography of d. Pedro and in relation to this specific screen, which belonged to the collection of Eldino Brancante and, previously, to the Orléans and Bragança family, I would like to know how it got to the Museum of Sacred Art collection, whether the canvas is signed and/or dated and, otherwise, what is the attribution of authorship.
